Free Walking Tour (tips-based)

What you get: A general overview, usually led by an expat student who has memorised a script. Groups of 20-40 people. You pay what you want at the end—most tours suggest €12–€18 per person.

The catch: Large groups mean you cannot ask questions, you walk at the group pace, and the depth is limited. The “free” price usually ends up similar to a paid tour — with a fraction of the experience.

Self-Guided (guidebook or app)

What you get: Freedom to go at your own pace, skip what does not interest you, and it costs nothing beyond the guidebook.

The catch: You miss the context. Walking past the Picasso Museum with a guidebook tells you it exists. Walking past it with a native tells you why Picasso chose Antibes in 1946, what he painted here—including the 23 works he gifted to the Château Grimaldi—and where he sat to paint it. For example, Picasso worked in a studio on the Rue de la Tourraque in the old town; a local guide can show you the exact building and explain why this Provençal port inspired one of his most prolific periods.
