Exploring Vieil Antibes: A Walk Through 2,500 Years

The old town of Antibes — Vieil Antibes — is a labyrinth of narrow streets, ochre buildings, and sudden views of the sea that stop you mid-sentence.

The Streets Tell Stories

Every street in Vieil Antibes has a name that tells you something. Rue de la Cité (Roman city). Rue des Maçons (the workers’ quarter). Rue du Bateau (a boat — literally a boat moored here once). Rue de l’Horloge (the clock tower that marked time for fishermen).

The buildings are 2-4 stories tall, painted in warm ochres and faded terracottas, with wooden shutters that clatter in the Mistral wind. Look up: you’ll see wrought-iron balconies, medieval stone archways, and the occasional Venetian-style Gothic window.

Not to Miss

• Cours Masséna — the covered market (mornings only, except Monday). Go for the produce, stay for the atmosphere.
• Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-la-Platea — 12th-century Romanesque with a 17th-century Baroque makeover. The wooden choir stalls are exquisite.
• The Ramparts — walk the entire circuit for views that change every 50 meters: port, sea, old town, Cap d’Antibes, and on clear days, the Estérel mountains.
• Place Nationale — the heart of the old town, with its terracotta pavement, plane trees, and the old fountain where women once did laundry.
• Hidden squares — there are at least a dozen tiny placettes, each with its own character, its own angle of sunlight, its own resident cat.

The Ramparts Walk

Don’t miss the 360° panorama: from the top of the ramparts you can see the Alps on snowy days, the Estérel massif to the southwest, the Lérins Islands (the ones with the famous monastery), and the entire Bay of Antibes. Best at golden hour, but worth it at any time.

Pro Tips

• Early morning — the old town is empty before 9 AM. The light is soft. The streets smell of fresh bread from the bakeries.
• After sunset — the streets are lit by warm lamps. The restaurant terraces buzz. It’s a different world.
• Look for plaques — there are informational plaques on many buildings, but they’re in French. Or come with me and I’ll translate.
