The Marché Provençal: Antibes’ Daily Festival of Food

Every morning (except Monday), the covered market at Cours Masséna transforms the center of Antibes into a celebration of Provençal life.

What to Expect

The market occupies a beautiful 19th-century cast-iron hall, open to the sides, with a glass roof that lets in the morning light. Underneath: the best produce the region has to offer.

Producers arrive from surrounding villages as early as 5 AM. By 8 AM, the hall is buzzing with activity — locals doing their daily shopping, tourists with cameras, and the unmistakable rhythm of French market life.

What to Buy

• Produce: Tomatoes that taste like tomatoes. Peaches that drip down your chin. Olives in every preparation imaginable.
• Cheese: Local goat cheeses (chèvre frais, brousse du Rove), aged Tomme, and the best mozzarella this side of Italy.
• Honey: Lavender honey, rosemary honey, chestnut honey — all from the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.
• Herbs: Bouquets garnis, herbes de Provence, and dried lavender that will make your luggage smell incredible for weeks.
• Socca: Hot, crispy chickpea pancake. Eat it immediately, standing up, with your hands. This is not optional.

What to Skip

The tourist souvenirs (lavender sachets, “Provençal” textiles made in China) are overpriced. The real souvenirs are the edible ones.

Tips

• Go early: 8-9 AM is the sweet spot — the selection is best but before the tourist rush at 10+
• Bring cash: Many producers don’t take cards
• Bring a bag: Reusable shopping bags are standard. You’ll need one.
• Say “bonjour”: Always greet the vendor before ordering. It’s not optional in France.
